Stella was the first of the modern cherries, developed (like many new cherry varieties) in Canada.
If you only intend to grow one cherry tree, then Stella is definitely worth considering. It is easy to grow and has the tremendous benefit of being self-fertile. It is also a good pollination partner for other cherries (many of which are not self-fertile) which is another reason for growing it in case you decide to add to your cherry collection later.
Although some experts may feel the flavour is not the best, if your only experience of cherries is from a market stall or supermarket then we still think you will be very happy with the flavour of Stella cherries straight from your own tree. It is also worth noting that, unlike with say apples, the difference between an exceptional cherry and an average cherry is not that great - and other factors such as picking at the point of optimum ripeness and eating immediately are more important!
Stella is a large dark red cherry, very juicy and sweet, and a typical cherry flavour.
