Rootstocks for sale
19th January 2012. We have now finished rootstock sales for winter 2012. You can order now for delivery in January 2013.
If you would like to try propagating your own trees we can offer small quantities of most of the major rootstocks. Availability of rootstocks changes very rapidly so in the first instance please use our enquiry form to let us know what you are interested in. If we are able to supply then we will create an order for you and you can pay online in the usual way.
Rootstocks are supplied in bundles containing multiples of 10 rootstocks. The minimum quantity is 1 bundle (=10 rootstocks). You can however have a mixed bundle, e.g. 4 x M9, 4 x M27 and 2 x St. Julien A.
The price is £40 per bundle, which includes delivery to mainland England, Wales, and southern Scotland. A delivery surcharge applies for other areas.
We can usually supply most of the Malling-series apple rootstocks, Quince A and Quince C pear rootstocks, Pixy and St. Julien A rootstocks for plums (the latter can also be used for many other Prunus species) and Colt and Gisela 5 rootstocks for cherries. Success rates with propagating apple trees are usually much better than for other fruit species. Professional grafters will achieve close to 100% success for apples. Amateurs (which includes the Orange Pippin webmaster!) may achieve 30%-50% - as with all skills it takes practice. This is one reason why we supply in bundles of 10, since if you are trying to propagate from a favourite old tree you should graft several rootstocks to ensure success.
All rootstocks are supplied as bare-root plants, and delivery takes place in the winter. Winter is the best time for grafting. You can also plant the rootstocks in the winter, and then bud-graft them in the summer. Please let us know if you intend to bench-graft or bud-graft as the latter is usually easier on thinner rootstocks.
